* Sep 9, 1900 New Orleans La.
† Nov 19, 1954 Ann Arbor Mi.
As a brass band musician he played with:
Henry Allen Brassband
Allen Hunter Gardette
was mentioned as one of Henry Allen trumpet players before de Depression.
He was the brother in law of Wilbert Tillman, who played clarinet and saxophone
and later on played the trumpet, because trumpet players got more work.
Allen Hunter Gardette was a pupil of
Louis Dumaine, a well known trumpet player who had his own brass band in the
‘40th and led his own band Dumaine’s Rag Time Band. Gardette’s son
Ernest, who was a drummer, also was a pupil of Dumaine. Allen Hunter Gardette
went on to be an arranger and teacher himself, taught the trumpeter Andy
Anderson, a long time member of the
Young Tuxedo Brass Band.
This information was given by John Joseph, interviewed
on Nov 26, 1958
Wilbert Tillman, who was discharged from the navy in 1920 said that, when he
came back to New Orleans he took clarinet lessons and the first band he played
with, in 1992 or 1923, was the Peerless, a family band led by Allen Hunter
Gardette. In this band also Wilbert’s brother Edward was on trombone, Allen’s
son Ernest, drums and a cousin Joe Batiste played banjo. The only outsider was
Nice Ross on bass.
Wilbert
Tillman was interviewed on Aug 15, 1961 and Jan 20, 1966
