As a brass band musician he played with: Excelsior, Henry Allen, Imperial, Onward, Pacific, Tuxedo Brass Band.

Under Manuel Perez he played in the Imperial Orchestra, about 1905. In 1910 he played with Bunk Johnson, Big Eye Louis Nelson in the Superior Orchestra. He's the older brother of trombone player "Yank" Johnson. 16
