As a brass band musician he played with: Deer Range, Eclipse, Chris Kelly, Henry "Kid" Rena Brass Band

He was a pupil of Professor Jim Humphrey and played with the Eclipse Brass Band and the Deer Range Brass band. In 1917 he came to New Orleans and played with several dance bands and Kid Rena's Brass Band. Later on he worked with Kid Thomas.16
