As a brass band musician he played with:
Eagle,
Excelsior,
Security Brass Band
He was an active drummer at the age of 13. Worked with Frankie
Duson's Eagle Band, 1910 on bass drum, and with the Excelsior Brass Band on
tuba. In 1911 he was with Perez' Imperial Orchestra on string bass. On those
year he regularly played with Joseph Petit's Security Brass band. He left New
Orleans in 1913 and worked with Lawrence Duhé at the Deluxe Cafe, then with
Freddie Keppard, Manuel Perez. In 1916 he joined King Oliver for a five-year
hitch which took him to California. In the early forties he participated in the
Kid Ory-led revival.16
In Don Marquis's book "In search of Buddy Bolden" he mentioned that Ed Garland
was born before 1890 on South Basin Street.5,p79
