As a brass band musician he played with:
Tuxedo Brass Band
He was a brother-in-law of Paul Barbarin, Freddie Keppard.
He studied with Sidney Bechet and Lorenzo Tio jr. First real
job was with Freddie Keppard in 1912 in Storyville. Led a band jointly with
Buddy Petit until 1917. Also worked irregularly with Kid Ory or Papa Celestin in
the district until it closed permanently. Migrated to Chicago, played with Joe
Oliver, Doc Cook, Zutty Singleton and led his own band at Apex Club.16
