Joe Howard with Louis Dumaine teached the boys
at the
Waif's Home in New Orleans. He was a teacher of Kid Shots Madison, who
first played drums in the home and later switched to cornet and tuba.
In the summer of 1918,
Joe Howard played at the S.S. President of the Streckfus line.
Pianist Fate Marable was their bandleader. The
lineup he led had Baby Dodds on drums and his older brother Johnny on clarinet;
Johnny St. Cyr, banjo; Pops Foster, bass; Bill Ridgeley, trombone; Dave Janes,
mellophone.
He was with Henry Allen's Brass Band from 1909 until 1911.
He played with Papa Celestin in the Original Tuxedo orchestra.
During WW I he he led his own group in the district and at the lake resorts. In
1920 he played with Louis Dumaine's Jazzola Eight. he played with the Tuxedo
Brass Band and recorded with the Original Zenith Brass Band in 1946.
