As a brass band musician he played with: Eureka, Henry "Kid" Rena, Tulane, Young Tuxedo  Brass Band

He was a pupil of Dave Perkins, 1912-1915 and was with the Tulane Orchestra to 1922.16

He recorded with the Avery-Tillman band on March 20, 1946. There's a tune called Joe Avery's Piece, called after him.
