On pages 2 and 3 of his March 27, 1957, interview, Paul
Barbarin (1901-1969) says he first heard 4/4 in New Orleans played by "Red
Happy" [Bolton] with Oliver and Ory in Economy Hall. The best
interpretation of the time this event must have taken place, according to
Hogann Jazz Archive curator Bruce Raeburn, was in 1917.

Red Happy Bolton is one of the
few musicians of the Colored Waif's Home Brass Band, that we find back later as
musician. Bolton was also in Piron's Olympia Orchestra
In 1926 he played on the 4 tunes
recorded by Ma Rainey with the Georgia Jazz Band.
Louis Armstrong
mentioned Redhead Happy Bolton, as the baritone singer in his quartet.
He also was with Armstrong the night he was arrested shooting his gun.
