As a brass band musician he played with: Melrose, Tulane, Tuxedo Brass band and George McCullum marching band

He was the brother of Honore Dutrey.

Sam played in the Silver Leaf Orchestra, 1907; Tulane Orchestra, 1915; with Papa Celestin, 1916 and on the S.S. Capital orchestra, 1920.16
