As a brass band musician he played with: Eureka, Chris Kelly, Henry "Kid" Rena Brass Band

Sammy Penn was also the drummer of the famous Kid Thomas band from the start until he died in 1969, on tour with the Preservation Hall Band.

Sammy came to New Orleans in 1921. in the mid-50's he took a group of his own to Chicago as Penn and his Five Pennies, but was soon back at his post with Thomas.16

Sammy suffered a stroke on the bandstand, on tour with the Preservation Hall Band.
