As a brass band musician he played with:
Reliance Brass Band
At 14 he played with ragtime bands and turned down offer to
go north with Original Dixieland Jass Band because of his youth. In New Orleans he
worked with Jack Laine's Reliance Brass Band and played excursions on the
steamer Majestic on Lake Ponchartrain. He was also in the Triangle and Alamo
theaters, the Pup cafe and with Johnny Dedroit's band. In 1925 he formed his
Liberty Theater and the Lavida Ballroom.16
