As a brass band musician he played with:
Henry Allen,
Eureka,
Excelsior,
Young Tuxedo Brass Band.
He was the oldest of the Humphrey brothers (Earl and Percy)
and began his professional in 1919 with
George McCullum in the Excelsior Brass
Band. He made short trip to St. Louis and Chicago to play with
George Filhe and
played on the riverboats. He played with Jelly Roll Morton and worked at
Anderson's restaurant on Rampart Street. Led his own band with
Maurice Durand
and Lee Collins at Spanish Fort.16
When traveling North he played with New Orleans musicians like
Lawrence Duhé and
Joe "King" Oliver. i1
