* Jul 4, 1893 New Orleans, La.
† Nov 23, 1961 Ca.
As a brass band musician he played with:
Imperial,
Onward,
Terminal,
Tuxedo Brass Band
Another trumpet player
Lionel liked very much was Maurice Durand (1893-1961). Durand played in
the twenties and thirties with the Onward and Tuxedo Brass Bands and led
his own dance band in the Pythian Temple Roof Garden (South Saratoga and
Gravier) and in a cabaret called The Alley adjacent to the St Bernard
Market (corner of St Bernard and N. Clayborne). Durand never recorded.

Harold Dejan: "Yeah, not too long. That's after he (Manuel Perez)
left the Roof Garden when he disbanded his band. He told me to come to
rehearsal and play on a couple of jobs. Perez was a top trumpet player. He
was strong! Kid Howard was too. Perez was a first class musician. He had a
band playing at the Country Club and all those swell places. When he came
off the Roof Garden, he made up another band, the Imperial Serenaders. His
brass band was the Imperial Brass Band, Eddie Cherie was playing E-flat
clarinet. The Imperial Serenaders were: Manuel Perez (tpt), Maurice Durand
(second tpt), Earl Humphrey (tbn), Alfred Williams (dms) and I think
Caffrey Darensburg (bjo). I don't know if we had a piano player...I can't
remember, it may have been Mercedes Garner. Yeah, she had bad teeth, she
talked yap yap yap (imitates), she was good though. Maurice Durand had his
own little band too, so I played with him too. Durand lived on Deslonde
Street in the 9th Ward and used to get all the jobs down St. Bernard
Parish. During the day he worked at a broom factory. He played on all the
weddings and St. Joseph day parties. Maurice used to play in the Alley
Cabaret by the St. Bernard Market, that's on Claiborne and St. Bernard and
in the back was the Alley Cabaret. The only one I remember in that band
was Tom Copeland on bass. Interview by Marcel Joly with
Herold Dejan 1982/1983
