1888© Music by Juventino Rosas Lyrics by ?

Juventino Rosas * Santa Cruz de Galeana (Mexico) 1868
                               † Surgidero de Batabanó (Cuba)1894

It was the theme song of Henry Brunies

Sombre las olas (OVER THE WAVES) was written by music composer Juventino Rosas a pure-blooded Otomi Mexican-indian. The song was composed in 1888 as a set of six waltzes entitled, Sobre las Olas. In Mexico the city were he was born  is renamed after him: Santa Cruz de Juventino Rosas.
Original no lyrics were written. In the early 1890s lyrics (in Spanish) were written, but it's not known who wrote them. This last information mr. Roberto Stuart,

The Eight Cavalry Maxican Band under the direction of Sig. Encarnacion Payen, played at  the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition which opened in New Orleans on December 16, 1884. It's good possible this band introduced the tune to New Orleans after which it became a permanent part of the New Orleans jazz repertoire.

For the movie "The great Caruso" Filmed in 1951, lyrics were written for one verse. Actress Ann Blyth song the song, called "IT'S THE LOVELIEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR." The song was re-arranged more than 60 years later by Kennedy and Finn, sporting the new title “Merry-Go-Round Waltz.”

Lyrics:

from the film it's the Loviest night of the year

When you are in love,
It's the loveliest night of the year,
Stars are twinkle above,
You can almost touch them from here.
Words fall into rhyme,
Anytime you're holding me near.

So kiss me my sweet
It's the loveliest night of the year.

Lyrics of the hit in 1951 from Mario Lanza

When you are in love
It's the loveliest night of the year
Stars twinkle above
And you almost can touch them from here

Words fall into rhyme
Any time you are holding me near
When you are in love
It's the loveliest night of the year

Waltzing along in the blue
Like a breeze drifting over the sand
Thrilled by the wonder of you
And the wonderful touch of your hand and...

My heart starts to beat
Like a child when a birthday is near
So kiss me, my sweet...
It's the loveliest night of the year

---- Instrumental Interlude ----

Waltzing along in the blue
Like a breeze drifting over the sand
Thrilled by the wonder of you
And the wonderful touch of your hand and...

My heart starts to beat
Like a child when a birthday is near
So kiss me, my sweet...
It's the loveliest night of the year
