Sing on was original a hymn. When Sam
Morgan's Jazz band, the first band to record hymns, recorded this tune on April 14, 1927 for Columbia Records in
New Orleans, the producer asked him to play the tune in a dance
rhythm.
He did and it became a real hit. When Morgan played it like that on a regular
job, people stopped dancing, because it was a hymn. Sam Morgan than played it
again as a hymn.
